Angel on the Moon
Turtle Pond, Central Park, New York City, 2021.
Size: 15"x12", Edition of 25 Size: 36"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 60"x40", Edition of 6
While walking home through Central Park on a spring afternoon I noticed a beautiful beam of light emerging from behind Belvedere Castle cutting across Turtle Pond. I decided to take in the moment at water-level on the rocks on the eastern shore with my Canon EOS R5 camera. A Great Egret was foraging in the shadows on the far bank. Would it come into the light? It did and in flight! I am always looking for the best light and in this instance was blessed with a great moment.
Every time I look at this image I am intrigued. Is this Great Egret a ballerina dancer yearning for her role at Lincoln Center or a figure skater preparing for her gold medal performance? A friend of mine recently said, she is an angel taking off on the surface of the moon. Hence, the title of this image. Angel on the Moon, indeed!
Brothers
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 15"x12", Edition of 25 Size: 24"x20", Edition of 12
Slender. Agile. Fast! All hallmarks of these graceful, beautiful spotted cats of the African Savannah. These two gorgeous young cheetahs are bothers. They hunt together. They play together. They protect one another. Until they are full grown and go on separate ways, their lives are intertwined.
Spending several days photographing the Brothers during my time in the Mara produced many great images but none more than this one which demonstrates their endless affection for one another. Bathed in a beautiful sunset their closeness tells a story of an unbreakable friendship.
Snowy Hawk
The North Woods, Central Park, New York City, 2021.
Size: 20"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 30"x40", Edition of 6
Most often photography is about research and having a plan. So nearly every time it snows in New York City my plan is fairly consistent: grab camera, look for raptors. The best time is always early morning before the City's heartbeat awakens from its slumber.
The image of this Red-tailed Hawk was taken during a February snowfall in Central Park's North Woods. The snow gathering on the bird's crown adds to its intimidating presence and majesty. When I think about a quintessential image of a hawk in the snow, this is it. This image cannot really go by any other name. This is Snowy Hawk.
Giraffe in Amboseli
Amboseli National Park, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 15"x12", Edition of 25 Size: 24"x20", Edition of 12
The world's tallest mammals. A giraffe's long legs and neck allow it to reach the leaves on the acacia tree. Being 18 feet tall as mature adults also allows them to see approaching danger. And when they see danger, their long legs can carry them as fast as 35 miles per hour. No doubt, giraffes are beautiful and unique.
But despite nature's gifts, sadly, giraffes cannot protect themselves from poachers. And as a result, giraffe populations are in decline. Giraffes are officially listed as "critically endangered." Can we imagine an Africa without these magnificent creatures?
Order in the Court!
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 36"x24", Edition of 12
In the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, our private jeep was concluding a late afternoon shoot in the field and heading back to camp. This image was a spontaneous Africa moment. We spotted this group of panicked ostriches on the horizon who clearly saw something we did not. To this day I cannot figure out what they were considering as the apparent leader on the right calls attention and order to the group. Hence the name, Order in the Court!
Every photographer should have heroes. One of mine is David Yarrow. I am humbled to think this image reminds me of something you could see in his vast, extraordinary collection of priceless fine art. After our evening meal in camp, I sat at the bar reviewing this image and a group of us concluded that it called for a mysterious black and white presentation, one hallmark of David's photography.
Hawk at First Light
The Ramble, Central Park, New York City, 2020.
Size: 20"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 30"x40", Edition of 6
Sometimes Central Park bears natural wonders in ways that are unexpected. The animals who call New York City home have adjusted well to the urban jungle.
It was bitter cold and the city was especially quiet on this Martin Luther King Day. As the crisp numbed my fingers, I peered into the naked woods as sunrise revealed this juvenile Cooper's Hawk, only twenty feet away.
Sometimes nature is patient with photographers and this Cooper's Hawk stared me down, curious, unfazed and confident. All days should begin this way. Surely, this is Hawk at First Light.
Sunset on Kilimanjaro
Amboseli National Park, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 36"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 60"x40", Edition of 6
Kilimanjaro. The tallest mountain in Africa. The weather evolves quickly on most mountaintops and Kilimanjaro is no exception. When the myst clears and Kilimanjaro shows its face, viewers are treated to an extraordinary glimpse of its enormity and beauty. Bathed in the warm glow of sunset creates a serenity that brings one of Africa's most identifiable natural monuments into clear focus.
The moment was perfected by the presence of a lone giraffe, seemingly in little hurry to nowhere as it walked toward a sun gently breaking the horizon. Sunsets in Africa do not get better than this one.
Elusive Cat
Maasai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 15"x12", Edition of 25 Size: 24"x20", Edition of 12
The leopard is the most secretive and notoriously unpredictable canine hunter in the African Savannah. It took us several days to find one of these strikingly beautiful cats. Unsurprisingly, this one was hidden in a tree, where leopards can escape lions and wild dogs, their most dangerous adversaries.
They are expert hunters and this dextrous cat easily managed to carry a gazelle into the treetop. While usually shy, this curious leopard stared us down from its high perch, permitting an ideal photo opportunity, up and directly into its striking eyes.
The Prestidigitator!
Turtle Pond, Central Park, New York City, 2021.
Size: 24"x20", Edition of 12
This Double-crested Cormorant was quietly going about its business diving for fish on Turtle Pond, when it unexpectedly rose from the water and boldly put itself on full display.
People often describe the Cormorant in this photo as being an orchestra maestro (Lincoln Center perhaps?) but I prefer to think of him as The Wizard of Central Park and hence the title of this photo., The Prestidigitator!
Taken near dusk with the sun 30 degrees off center behind the bird provides a striking reflection on the surface of the water and illuminates the droplets in exciting fashion. This is one of my favorite images from the spring birding season in New York City this past year.
The Boss
Amboseli National Park, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 24"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 40"x40", Edition of 6
The King of the Jungle. Confident. Fearless. Intimidating. Africa's apex predator. Our highly skilled guide positioned our jeep so we were eye-level with this male lion as he walked over a nearby ridge, in slow pursuit of a lone female.
The lion's eyes strike fear and it is abundantly clear he means business.
The Watchful Eye
The Ramble, Central Park, New York City, 2021.
Size: 20"x24", Edition of 12 Size: 30"x40", Edition of 6
They say the eye in the sky watches all. Overlooking the bare winter forest terrain makes it easy for this Cooper's Hawk to see any motion below. What will fall prey to satisfy the morning cravings of this deadly raptor and skilled hunter?
The light in this image was nearly perfect. The early morning sun struck the hawk but had not yet fully illuminated the partially overcast western sky, thus providing ideal contrast and a great sense of depth.
This work is a statement piece and would make an ideal prize for the wall in your study or corner office.
Fortitude
Lewa Wildlife Conservancy, Kenya, 2019.
Size: 36"x24", Edition of 12
It was our last morning in Lewa and we were able to move relatively close to a large herd of African Buffalo.
There was one individual in the herd which caught my attention. With a heavy head covered in mud and grass and a tired look in its eyes, I felt this buffalo exemplifies the hard, harsh life on the African plains.
Cardinal on Fire!
The North Woods, Central Park, New York City, 2021.
Size: 15"x12", Edition of 25
There is a special spot in the North Woods were the January light at dusk throws a narrow beam of light between the trees. The sun illuminates only that spot, leaving the background in near darkness. Over a period of many weeks I patiently canvassed that area hoping for a bird to perch in the right place at the right time. Could there have been a more intriguing subject than a male cardinal?
This is one of my favorite photos from the entire 2021 winter season. It will be available only in 15"x12" and would make a lovely edition in any decor anywhere in your home. The cardinal's brilliant red takes on an orange hue in the last moments of daylight making him look like he is on fire!
